Zymomonas mobilis invertase gene
The invertase gene derived from Zymomonas mobilis breaks down sucrose into glucose and fructose sugars by hydrolysis of the alpha 1,4 linkage. This gene is specific for cyanobacteria, which naturally produces sucrose through uptake of CO2 and sunlight. Thus, upon cleavage of the alpha 1,4 bond, the glucose released is an important source of energy that can feed other bacteria.
